Finding a trusted hairdresser can be one of life’s eternal pains. But at Just Hair, you’ll never have to utter the words “don’t worry, it will grow out” ever again! The family run salon has been serving the North Ryde community for 37 years with Catherine Maria Futo at the helm for the past 13 with a queue of happy customers already booked in for their next appointment.
Catherine has been with the business since she was a teen, starting as an apprentice on a Saturday and Thursday night as a 12-year-old. It’s this continuity of a familiar face she attributes to her customers’ loyalty, when she bought the salon in 2003 many of the customers stayed on because they remembered her hard working junior days, “most of my customers I have seen for the last 30 years.”
But Catherine has not always been in the North Ryde area with an opportunity to train overseas too good to give up. “I got to work in one of the largest hairdressing salons in Northern Ireland,” whose techniques broadened the skill-set of the North Ryde native. “They use different colouring systems, they use different techniques, most of their cutting systems come from Milan.”
It’s the combination of Aussie know-how and Milanese flare Catherine brings to her salon that keeps the repertoire fresh. Just Hair’s stylists are across every major hair trend from celebrities to the fashion world, but they do pay homage to a time honoured Aussie classic – the perm. “We’re actually one of the only salons this side of Sydney that perms.”
“The personal service is a big deal.” The salon is part of the Joico hair colouring family which includes the balayage colouring technique – running dye through to the bottom of long hair for a more natural look – but if a customer has a personal preference or has an allergic reaction to specific colouring ingredients, Catherine says they “will find a colouring system especially for them.”
Community support comes through voucher donation, but Just Hair also donate their hairdressing skills to local organisations. “We’ve done a few events cutting hair for schools in North Ryde,” and support for charity events like Shave for the Cure keeps the salon in touch with the best of the community. “Basically anybody who comes in looking for vouchers for whatever event they’ve got on,” Just Hair won’t turn them away empty handed. Why wouldn’t you want to stick around for a cut and colour?
