When starting out in business, choosing a location is perhaps the most important decision made, requiring detailed planning and research. Tony Fedele the owner of Thrifty Link Hardware should know, “I’ve been coming to this store since I was 14.”
One day a twist of fate brought Tony, who is an electrician by trade, into the store, however this time he would be leaving with more than he bargained for, “I blew my pliers up and I came into buy a new pair and I bought the hardware store instead!”
After working at the Cox’s Road Mall as an electrician, Tony bought the hardware store and for the past 32 years has never looked back. And neither has the area, “the demographic has changed and the area has become more affluent, less tradies, but more doctors and dentists.”
Perhaps the drainage on local tradesman in the area could have something to do with the expert help employed by Tony, “all my guys are either highly trained in handyman stuff and most of them are even tradies themselves. I’ve got plumbers, electricians, painters and handymen.”
It’s the honest, no nonsense advice Tony’s customers appreciate which secures their loyalty, “we don’t lie to anybody, we don’t sell something for the sake of it, we tell it as it is. We go out of our way for them with whatever their requests are. We just do what we need to do to keep the customer happy.”
The store specialises in hardware, but has diversified over the years to include pool water testing and tool sharpening, as well as any ad hoc requests from the DIY homeowner, “if people want stuff ordered in which they can’t find anywhere else, we will do that. Whatever they need.”
Thrifty Link also helps out in the community ensuring all requests for donations are honoured, believing a sense of community is important to North Ryde, “we always donate. We never ever say no to anybody, it may not be a big donation, but it’s something.
“Our biggest issue as a hardware store is a lot of people don’t even know we are here.”
