There is a special place reserved in the hearts and minds of a community when a business gives back. Richies Supermarket, part of the IGA Australia wide family is one of those, although you wouldn’t know it after chatting with Ahmed, the stores Assistant Manager, “we’ve got a community card where customers, whatever they purchase a percentage goes to a community club or centre.”
However, the card, called the Community Benefit Card, is not just any rewards card: since its introduction, the card has raised an eye watering $45 million for local community initiatives.
Richies Supermarket saw an opportunity at a grassroots level to make a difference in the North Ryde area. Customers nominate a local club, school or charity and 0.5% of their shop is donated on their behalf, dependent on a monthly minimum spend of $2000.
It’s that simple. And Community Benefit Cardholders also enjoy exclusive members only savings like the CB saver program with hundreds of specials every week.
Ahmed, who has been in retail for 20 years, believes the program hasn’t gotten the traction in the community it deserves, “yeah it could be better. If people want to support their charity, community organisation like schools and what not, shop here.” With potentially millions more dollars to be injected back into the community, this initiative is a fantastic way to keep money local.
It’s clear Richies Supermarket’s dedication to the needs of their customer sets them apart from the larger supermarket chains where bottom lines and profit margins dominate, instead of customer experience and going the extra mile.
Where Richies Supermarket lacks fresh produce, meats and deli items, it makes up for with well stocked groceries and a can-do attitude, “if we don’t have it we will get it. Pretty much any grocery line we can get our hands on we’ll go out of our way to get it.”
Which says it all, a personalised shopping experience tailored to North Ryde and initiatives that reward the community who shop there. In the brief, but to the point words of Ahmed, Richies IGA supermarket has “great customer service and a great range.” That’s really all you need.
